What shape does the tea bag you usually use have?

There are various theories about the origin of the tea bag, but the most widely accepted one seems to be that in the 20th century, an American tea merchant sent samples in silk bags, which led to the creation of the modern tea bag. Later, the material was changed to gauze and became commercially successful, eventually leading to the tea bag as we know it today. The concept of a tea bag, which allows for easy brewing of a single cup of tea and is simple to maintain, was likely quickly accepted by people due to its many advantages.

Today, various types of tea bags are sold. The classic, traditional double-chamber tea bag is probably the most famous. Other types include flat square bags and round tea bags without a tag string. Among these, the triangular tea bag, a more recent innovation and often recognized as part of the premium lineup, has gained popularity. The triangular shape provides more space for the tea leaves to move, allowing the tea to steep in the same way as it would in a teapot, resulting in a rich flavor and an excellent extraction.

In fact, there is a record that the world’s first triangular tea bags were produced in Japan in 1987 (quoted from the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, 1987). Interestingly, in Japan, triangular tea bags have become more widespread than double-chamber bags. The packaging machine that manufactures triangular tea bags is, in fact, our company’s FUSO machine, a pioneer in the industry. The FUSO machine was first delivered to overseas customers in 2001. Today, FUSO machines are used in over 60 countries, and triangular tea bags are produced around the world. You can learn more about the FUSO machine on our special feature page—please check it out!

Even though we may take things for granted in our everyday lives, learning about their origins and history often makes them more intriguing. With a cup full of technology and dedication, we hope today is a wonderful day for you!
